Reduction of Artificial Lighting for Longday by GA3 Application on Chrysanthemum Cut Flower Production.

The costly electricity consumption for longday in chrysanthemum production have made modifications on cultural practices were then, urgent to be investigated. The application of growth regulator was considered to have more desirable effects on this case as far as these concerned. The research was conducted to find out the effects of GA3 application in combination with longday on growth and development of several chrysanthemum cultivars. The experiment was carried out at The Indonesian Ornamental Crops Research Institute from March to October 2006. A split plot randomized completely blocked design with 3 replications was used in the experiment. The results showed that growth and development of chrysanthemum plants were influenced by GA3-longday treatments. In GA3-treated plants, shorten longday period reduced the plant height, internode length and number of flowers per plant and only the treatment of 3 weeks longday+200 ppm GA3 gave insignificant values with 4 weeks longday. Varietal differences were also observed on the plant height, flower initiation and number of flowers per plant. Among the cultivars tested, however, only cv. Puspita Nusantara Nusantara and Retno Dumilah that showed insignificant differences in stem diameter when treated with 3 weeks longday+200 ppm GA3 compared to standard practice of 4 weeks longday.
